Bali’s New Toll Road: Cutting Travel Time and Boosting Regional Growth

Article

Bali, a paradise of cultural heritage and stunning landscapes, is set to transform its infrastructure with the Gilimanuk-Mengwi toll road. This project will slash travel time from the island’s west (Gilimanuk) to the south (Mengwi) from 5-7 hours to just 1.5-2 hours. Travelers and locals will soon enjoy unprecedented convenience and efficiency.

The toll road isn’t merely about time-saving; it also unlocks economic opportunities across the island. Stretching 96.84 kilometers, the road spans three districts; Jembrana, Tabanan, and Badung and passes through 58 villages. These connections ensure better access to markets and resources, empowering rural areas to thrive.

Innovation at Its Core

The project integrates advanced technology to enhance user experience. It will implement the Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) system, eliminating the need for traditional toll booths. Payments will use a satellite-based system, reducing congestion and ensuring smooth traffic flow. Vehicles equipped with GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) technology can seamlessly pass through without delays.

Construction is underway and expected to finish by 2025. The project is divided into three sections: Gilimanuk-Pekutatan (53.6 km), Pekutatan-Soka (24.3 km), and Soka-Mengwi (18.9 km). Each section contributes to making Bali’s western regions more accessible to its bustling southern hubs.

Empowering Tourism and Local Communities

The toll road will feature rest areas in key locations like Jembrana and Soka. These stops won’t just serve drivers but also showcase Balinese culture through local crafts, food, and performances. This creates a unique blend of utility and cultural appreciation.

This toll road is more than just infrastructure; it’s a gateway to revitalized tourism and economic equity. Travelers will explore hidden gems in Bali’s lesser-known regions with ease. Locals will benefit from increased traffic to their businesses and better transportation access. This synergy promotes sustainable tourism and fosters growth for all stakeholders.
